Below are the top 10 most economical 4x4's in the U.K. based on their combined MPG.

All the cars have similar sized diesel engines, around the 2.0 litre mark. All ten of the vehicles in the list are known as crossover cars - they are not pure bred four wheel drives and as a result their off-road capabilities are limited.

Off-road vehicles with pedigree, greater four wheel drive functionality and ability will always be less fuel efficient than these crossover cars. Take the Toyota LandCruiser and Land Rover Discovery for instance, whose combined MPG's by way of comparison are 35 and 31 respectively.

The Fiat Sedici is the best selling SUV in the Italian market. Sedici means sixteen in Italian (4x4 = 16).

Its a very light car for an SUV weighing only 1,400 kg and very small - its only 162 inches long. Its size helps enormously in achieving its high MPG figure. The downside of its small size according to reviewers of the Sedici is tight rear passenger space and a tiny boot.

For a crossover 4WD, reviewers report that the Sedici has reasonably good off-road capabilities with plenty of grip available.
