The table below lists the top 10 most economical sports cars in the U.K. based on combined MPG.

Purists may not be happy to see it but diesels claim the top four spots. You'd have been called crazy to mention the words 'diesel' and 'sports car' together a few years ago.
The most economical petrol powered sports car is the Mazda MX-5. The latest version of this very affordable sports car gets great reviews and its handling is likened to the wonderful original.

The most economical supercar maker is Porsche who's Boxster just makes the list at number 10.

Volkswagen Scirocco

The most economical sports car is the Volkswagen Scirocco.

Fuel economy never really used to be important in a sports car. It was all about speed and handling. Now though, things have changed.

The Scirocco's economy is due to its 2.0 litre common rail turbodiesel engine. Apart from being very efficient it produces a maximum of 138bhp and 236lb ft of torque which is good enough for a 0-60mph time of 9.3 seconds. Not blisteringly quick but still a lot of fun when combined with a platform thats based on the excellent handling Golf, except a little wider in stance.
